1. First u have to keep 1st cylinder at TDC position. In Tata especially 697 engine in vibration damper they marked red mark. In cummins engine, they given a hole to lock the cam shaft at TDC position.
2. Check it out whether 1st cylinder valves are in free position . means pushrod rotates freely. In TATA 697 , adjust the backlash (as per mfr guidelines) in valves order 1,2,3,5,7,9 (valves no given from front side of engine . In india Most of the engine will have this order. For cummins 1,2,3,6,7,10 Valves order vary with engine mfrs accrding with valve arrangement.)
3. Rotate crankshaft full 360 deg ,means your engine next end now will free . do it for remaining 12,11,10,8,6,4 . thats it .

Normally blue smoke presists coz of engine oil burning in chamber. and white smoke coz of wrong timing, turbo malfunctioning, FIB governer malfunctiong.,
